STORY: INSANE

CLASSROOM READY NARRATIVE

Jen’s career

For some, Jen’s was a second-rate job.

Not cushy enough for her.

She deserved better.

As Gordon’s assistant, she was always in the shadow, always invisible.

Gordon’s career

But for Jen, it was her chosen career.

Every Wednesday, she enjoyed watching Gordon at work.

At first glance, Gordon looked as if he was just lounging away his working hours, barely paying attention to those around him. But appearances can be misleading.

As soon as Gordon saw one of them come out of their shell, everything about him would change in a heartbeat. He would tilt his head, with his lip quivering and his eyes prickling with unshed tears.

Gordon never needed words to communicate that he was always there for them. He was there to lighten the mood and soothe. He was there to provide comfort and so much more.

For Gordon, it wasn’t a job. It was his vocation. In fact, it was his entire life.

The unthinkable

Then last week, the unthinkable happened.

Jen couldn’t believe her eyes as she entered the room.

And it was heart-breaking to see Gordon’s reaction. He looked at Jen with those big tearful hazel eyes. Then he turned away and leaned against the wall, with a sigh.

Not a single person showed up.

Insane!
(Now choose your own ending – only one: A or B?)

Jen had to act fast. She mustered up all her confidence and resourcefulness. And when things took an unexpected turn, she just mumbled, “What have I done? Insane!” and her mouth crinkled into a smile.

What did Jen do?
B |

Jen had to act fast. She mustered up all her confidence and resourcefulness. And when things took an unexpected turn, she just mumbled, “What have I done? Insane!” and her face crinkled up in disgust.

What did Jen do?
